Rediscover Comfort Through Precision
At The Spine Center, we harness the potential of Sacroiliac (SI) Joint
Injections to diagnose and address pain originating from the SI joint,
ensuring our patients move with greater ease and confidence.
Unraveling the Sacroiliac (SI) Joint
The SI joint connects the spine's base with the pelvis, bearing the weight and
transferring forces between the upper body and the legs. Because of its
pivotal position, it can sometimes become a source of lower back or leg pain.
Accurately diagnosing pain stemming from the SI joint is crucial for effective
treatment.
Types of SI Joint Injections
To achieve utmost accuracy in determining the pain source, SI Joint Injections
are performed tailored to the specific side:
-
Left SI Joint: Targeting the left side to ascertain if pain originates from
this joint.
-
Right SI Joint: Focusing on the right side for the same diagnostic purpose.
-
Bilateral: When symptoms suggest both joints may be involved, bilateral
injections provide a comprehensive overview.
What happens during the actual procedure?
-
You will lie on a procedure table, and the target area will be cleaned and
sterilized.
- A local anesthetic will be applied to numb the injection site.
-
Using state-of-the-art fluoroscopic equipment for guidance, the physician
will carefully insert a needle into or around the facet joint.
-
Once the needle is correctly positioned, a mixture of local anesthetic, and
sometimes a contrast dye, is administered into the SI joint.
-
After the injection, the needle is removed, and the injection site is
covered with a small bandage.
-
Post-procedure, patients are observed briefly to monitor for any immediate
reactions.
Benefits & Aftercare
Immediate pain relief from the injection indicates the SI joint as the pain
source. The diagnostic clarity offers valuable insights into the subsequent
treatment approach. Some post-procedure soreness might be experienced but is
generally mild and transient.
Preparing for Your SI Joint Injection
- Inform your physician about any medications you are taking.
-
Depending on your medication, you might be asked to stop certain medications
a few days before the procedure.
-
Avoid eating or drinking for at least six hours prior to the procedure.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Ensure you have someone to drive you home after the procedure.
