What Is Anterior Cervical Fusion?
An anterior cervical fusion (also known as an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion) is a surgical procedure that involves joining two or more vertebrae in the neck to create a solid bone. This approach is often used to treat conditions, such as herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, or spinal instability, that cause neck pain, arm pain, or weakness. By fusing the vertebrae together, Dr. Saqib Siddiqui at The Spine Center can help relieve pain, stabilize the spine, and improve overall neck function. Dr. Siddiqui performs anterior cervical fusions for patients throughout Texas and Florida with a focus on expertise and care so that they can find relief from discomfort and an improved overall quality of life. If you live near Houston, Dallas, or Austin, TX, or Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL, and are considering spinal surgery to help with neck pain or discomfort, schedule a consultation at our practice to discuss your treatment options.
How Is an Anterior Cervical Fusion Performed?
Once anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Siddiqui will start with an incision in the front of the neck to access the cervical spine. He'll then remove the damaged disc or bone to relieve compression on the nerves and replace it with a bone graft or implant to promote fusion between the vertebrae. Finally, he'll install a metal plate and screws to provide extra support for added stability as the bones fuse.
What Are the Benefits of an Anterior Cervical Fusion?
An anterior cervical fusion can provide meaningful relief for patients experiencing persistent neck or nerve-related pain that hasn't responded to more conservative treatments. By stabilizing the cervical spine, this surgery helps restore comfort and function in daily life, offering benefits that include:
- Relieves pressure on spinal nerves that cause pain, numbness, or weakness
- Improves neck stability and support
- Reduces radiating pain into the shoulders and arms
- Helps prevent further spinal damage or nerve irritation
- Enhances overall quality of life and mobility
The Spine Center Reviews
Before I saw Dr. Siddiqui, I was almost at maximum pain medication. I was homebound most of the time the last 2 years. I spent a lot of my time in bed because lying down offered some relief from pain. My quality of life was gone. I had already tried injections, burning of nerves and physical therapy. Nothing helped. I was in dire need of surgery. My doctor reffered me to Dr. Siddiqui. What a Godsend he was! I had a Lumbar Laminectomy done. It was a day of surgery here at surgery center , I woke up from surgery pain free!! After years of deliberating pain, I thought nothing would help me. Boy, I was wrong! Dr. Siddiqui is very caring and professional. I was walking again, I got my life back. I also had to have neck surgery, which he performed about 6 weeks later. I am getting out in the world and enjoying life again! I thought I would never see this day. Thank you Dr. Siddiqui!
