What Is an Anterior Lumbar Fusion?
An anterior lumbar fusion, also called an anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), is a surgical procedure that stabilizes the lower spine by removing a damaged disc and fusing the vertebrae together. This procedure is typically performed to treat conditions such as degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or spinal instability, giving patients a chance to experience long-term relief from lower back pain and mobility issues. At The Spine Center, Dr. Saqib Siddiqui has helped countless patients enjoy more active lives free from the discomfort of degenerative disc disease and other spinal issues. With offices throughout Texas, including Houston, Austin, and Dallas, as well as Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL, our practice is committed to helping you get to the root of your back pain. Schedule your consultation today to learn if you're a candidate for an anterior lumbar fusion at The Spine Center.
How Is an Anterior Lumbar Fusion Performed?
An anterior lumbar fusion begins with Dr. Siddiqui making a small incision in the lower abdomen, usually near the belly button. After gently moving the abdominal muscles aside to access the lumbar spine, he'll carefully move the damaged disc to relieve pressure and create space for the fusion. The disc will be replaced with an advanced implant designed to restore proper spacing and encourage the vertebrae to fuse. The area will then be reinforced with plates or screws to hold the implant in place and support the spine while it heals. Because the approach avoids cutting through back muscles, patients typically experience less disruption to surrounding tissues during surgery.
What Are the Benefits of an Anterior Lumbar Fusion?
Living with constant low back pain can make simple things like walking, sitting, or standing for long periods exhausting. An anterior lumbar fusion helps by addressing the source of lower back pain and giving the lower spine a stronger, more stable foundation. The benefits of this advanced spinal surgery include:
- Takes pressure off pinched nerves that cause pain, tingling, or weakness in the legs
- Restores normal spacing between the bones in the lower back
- Provides a solid base of support to make movement easier and more comfortable
- Helps improve posture by correcting spinal alignment in the lumbar region
- Offers long-term relief so patients can return to daily activities with less discomfort
The Spine Center Reviews
Before I saw Dr. Siddiqui, I was almost at maximum pain medication. I was homebound most of the time the last 2 years. I spent a lot of my time in bed because lying down offered some relief from pain. My quality of life was gone. I had already tried injections, burning of nerves and physical therapy. Nothing helped. I was in dire need of surgery. My doctor reffered me to Dr. Siddiqui. What a Godsend he was! I had a Lumbar Laminectomy done. It was a day of surgery here at surgery center , I woke up from surgery pain free!! After years of deliberating pain, I thought nothing would help me. Boy, I was wrong! Dr. Siddiqui is very caring and professional. I was walking again, I got my life back. I also had to have neck surgery, which he performed about 6 weeks later. I am getting out in the world and enjoying life again! I thought I would never see this day. Thank you Dr. Siddiqui!
