What Is a Lateral Lumbar Fusion?
Lateral lumbar fusion (also called lateral lumbar interbody fusion, or LLIF) is a less invasive approach to lower back surgery that involves fusing two or more vertebrae together to relieve pain and stability problems. Unlike traditional methods that go through the back or abdomen, lateral lumbar fusion is performed by going through the patient's side, resulting in minimal scarring and less trauma to the important muscles and supporting structures around the spine. At The Spine Center, Dr. Saqib Siddiqui commonly recommends LLIF for patients suffering from conditions like degenerative disc disease, scoliosis, and spondylolisthesis, which can impact stability in the lower back. With this side approach, many patients are able to walk the very same day. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Siddiqui at any of our practice locations, including Houston, Dallas, and Austin, TX, or Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL, to learn if less invasive spinal surgery with lateral lumbar fusion is the right solution for your lower back pain.
How Is a Lateral Lumbar Fusion Performed?
Before surgery, we'll position you on your side and administer anesthesia. Dr. Siddiqui will begin the lateral lumbar fusion procedure by making two small incisions in your side, giving him access to the spine. He'll then insert slender instruments through the incisions to locate the compressed nerve roots and remove the damaged portion of the disc without disrupting the overlying muscles. A bone graft will be inserted into the newly opened space, along with a bone block or implant, to help stabilize the lower spine. As the graft fuses with the vertebrae, you should start to notice improvements in pain and stability.

The Spine Center Reviews
Before I saw Dr. Siddiqui, I was almost at maximum pain medication. I was homebound most of the time the last 2 years. I spent a lot of my time in bed because lying down offered some relief from pain. My quality of life was gone. I had already tried injections, burning of nerves and physical therapy. Nothing helped. I was in dire need of surgery. My doctor reffered me to Dr. Siddiqui. What a Godsend he was! I had a Lumbar Laminectomy done. It was a day of surgery here at surgery center , I woke up from surgery pain free!! After years of deliberating pain, I thought nothing would help me. Boy, I was wrong! Dr. Siddiqui is very caring and professional. I was walking again, I got my life back. I also had to have neck surgery, which he performed about 6 weeks later. I am getting out in the world and enjoying life again! I thought I would never see this day. Thank you Dr. Siddiqui!
